Interviews/Articles regarding Nick and Diabetes.
When Nick Jonas was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in November 2005, the first thing he asked his doctor was, “Am I going to die?”

The vocalist, guitarist, drummer and youngest member of the pop rock band the Jonas Brothers, lost 15 pounds in two weeks, was drinking 20 to 30 bottles of water per day and had an uncharacteristically bad attitude.

“I’m a pretty nice guy,” said 14-year-old Jonas, of his normal disposition.

Type 1 diabetes, which usually affects children and young adults, occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar (glucose), starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

Tween-age fans of the curly haired star can breathe a sigh of relief — he’s not going to die. But, the diagnosis did mean Jonas would have to learn to control his diabetes with up to 10 insulin injections per day — not easy for someone touring the country and Europe with his siblings, Kevin, 19, and Joe, 17.

“On the road, it’s a little harder than it would be at home,” Jonas explained during a recent phone interview from California, where he’s putting the finishing touches on the group’s new CD. “I’d be in the back of the van trying to take a shot with people around. It’s difficult, but you learn how to do it.”

But all that’s changed since Jonas began using the OmniPod Insulin Management System, a small, disposable self-adhering pod pump worn on the skin that continually delivers insulin without the use of needles for up to three days.

Developed by Bedford, Mass.-based Insulet Corporation, OmniPod uses a tiny flexible tube called a cannula inserted 6.5 mm beneath the skin to administer the insulin. Each pod holds up to 200 units of insulin.

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus, sometimes Diabetes  is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and other signs, as distinct from a single illness or condition. The World Health Organization recognizes three main forms of diabetes mellitus: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (occurring during pregnancy),[1] which have similar signs, symptoms, and consequences, but different causes and population distributions. Ultimately, all forms are due to the beta cells of the pancreas being unable to produce sufficient insulin to prevent hyperglycemia.[2] Type 1 is usually due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin. Type 2 is characterized by tissue-wide insulin resistance and varies widely; it sometimes progresses to loss of beta cell function. Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 diabetes, in that it involves insulin resistance; the hormones of pregnancy cause insulin resistance in those women genetically predisposed to developing this condition.

Types 1 and 2 are incurable chronic conditions, but have been treatable since insulin became medically available in 1921, and today are usually managed with a combination of dietary treatment, tablets (in type 2) and, frequently, insulin supplementation. Gestational diabetes typically resolves with delivery.

Diabetes can cause many complications. Acute complications (hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis or nonketotic hyperosmolar coma) may occur if the disease is not adequately controlled. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease (doubled risk), chronic renal failure (diabetic nephropathy is the main cause of dialysis in developed world adults), retinal damage (which can lead to blindness and is the most significant cause of adult blindness in the non-elderly in the developed world), nerve damage (of several kinds), and microvascular damage, which may cause erectile dysfunction (impotence) and poor healing. Poor healing of wounds, particularly of the feet, can lead to gangrene which can require amputation — the leading cause of non-traumatic amputation in adults in the developed world. Adequate treatment of diabetes, as well as increased emphasis on blood pressure control and lifestyle factors (such as not smoking and keeping a healthy body weight), may improve the risk profile of most aforementioned complications.

Hi Everyone. Thanks for coming to visit www.nickssimplewins.com a site that is all about diabetes. I know when I found out I had type 1 diabetes, I was afraid and thought, "Why me?" Then I said, "Why not me?"

Honestly, it was quite overwhelming when they first told me I was type 1. So many questions were going thru my mind. Was I going to be OK? How do I handle this change? Will it impact my music career? I needed answers. So along with my family we educated ourselves and learned that this is manageable. My family has been so supportive during this whole transition, learning about diabetes and how to make it work with the life I have.

I decided I was not going to let it slow me down. You can do the same. Something so life changing is never easy. You have to be positive, eat right and check your blood glucose level often.
Learning how to give myself insulin was also very important in my everyday understanding of my diabetes.

Most importantly it's reassuring to know you're not in it alone, which is why I started this blog. If what I've learned about living with diabetes can help you, that's the best reward in the world.
So don't forget to come back to check for more postings from me. - Nick

Hello from New York!

Although my week has been non-stop and filled with craziness (that's a good thing), I had to take a moment to stop and write a quick thank you to all of you who have responded to my first blog. Our fans are truly the best fans in the world and because of the unending support you have shown me, I have another reason to get thru every day. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your heartfelt responses to my blog. Your stories are truly inspirational. There will be more blogs to come so please keep checking back. Maybe we will even feature a few of your responses in the upcoming months. - Nick

Hello all-

Since my last blog, we performed at the VMAs, wrapped up our tour, filmed another video and rented out Dodgers Stadium for a little bit of fun. Speaking of Dodgers Stadium, it is also the home of the November 1st JDRF Walk where I will be with TEAM JONAS. Hope you had a chance to enter the W.I.N.S Sweepstakes, I can't wait to see who is going to win and represent the team. Bayer and I thought this would be a great way to raise awareness regarding diabetes and diabetes care. As you know this is an important time of the year for diabetes as we all work hard to raise awareness and money for more research to find the cure. What better way to kick off National Diabetes Month than to be out there supporting the cause.

Production of our new Disney TV Show began this week, it is a pretty hectic schedule but I have to tell you it is nice to be sleeping in my own bed for more than one night here and there. The show is going to be taping thru the end of year, I wish I could say that was the only thing I am going to be doing, but you know better than that. JB has a lot of surprises planned for you before the end of the year.

It was great to see so many of you out on the road, I hope all of you had as great of a summer as I did.

Until next time-

December is a wonderful time in the Jonas Family. I personally love the holidays. Every year my dad takes out the big box of ornaments and makes the family talk about the tradition behind each one.

This will be Elvis' first Christmas with me. It is going to be hilarious to watch him on Christmas morning. I wonder if the presents under the tree will survive until then.

Watching what you eat is probably even more important with all the Holiday Parties and Festivities happening this month. I use my CONTOUR® meter, and its meal markers to help me daily but especially during the holidays. Those meal markers help me know where I stand and stay in control, so I don't have to slow down when it comes to eating Mom's Christmas Dinner.

As 2008 comes to a close I reflect on all the blessings I have received and give many thanks for having such an amazing year. I wish nothing but health and happiness to all of you throughout this Holiday Season and the New Year.

Happy Holidays!!

January was a busy month but February is going to be even more fun! In January, we presented at the Golden Globe Awards and had the honor of performing at The Kids Ball in Washington for President Obama's Inauguration. All of Washington was buzzing with excitement that week and we were glad that we were able to be a part of it.

The schedule that we keep is just another reason being in control of my diabetes is so important to me. Bayer and their Contour meter help me achieve that goal everyday.

This month my brothers and I have a lot of "firsts" planned. The Grammys were this month. We performed, but are even more thrilled that we were nominated! Both things are really a dream come true. Did you enjoy our performance with Stevie Wonder? It was truly an honor to grace the stage with such a living legend.

On February 14th we will be performing on Saturday Night Live. Most of that week actually we will be in NYC doing press letting everyone know about our 3D movie which comes out February 27th.

This month will round out with lots of promo for the premiere of our 3D Movie, continuing to record our TV series, JONAS, appearing in the Barbara Walters Oscar Night Special and much more. Have you decided where you are going to see the 3D Movie? Remember it comes out the 27th! I hope that you enjoy it.

My Simple Win this month? Being able to manage my diabetes well enough to be performing at the Grammys and premiering our 3D Movie!

Happy Valentines Day.

I want to start off by saying thank you to Jordan and Billy from JDRF. Billy was the cameraman and Jordan was the reporter who covered our 3D Movie Premiere in Los Angeles for Nickssimplewins.com. You two did a great job and if you haven't checked it out go to the video section and see all the interviews they captured on the carpet.

We are currently doing one of my favorite parts of being a Jonas Brother. . . recording! The creative process of writing and recording music can be very relaxing, especially when everything around us is going 100 MPH. I can't wait for all of you to hear the new music. We already have 8 - 9 songs done for the next CD.

Last week I spent a day with my partners from Bayer. We spent all day planning everything we are going to bring you this year. It was a very long day which included a photo shoot and video shoot along with some brainstorming sessions. They also previewed some new products and programs we will be launching. You'll learn more about those in the coming months. I have included a couple shots from the day.

Time to head to the studio; don't forget to watch us on the Kids Choice Awards this weekend.

My Simple Win this month? Creating new music for our fans to enjoy.

Happy Easter!

It is a great segment about diabetes. Then on May 2nd our TV series JONAS debuts on the Disney Channel! It was a lot of fun filming that so we hope that you enjoy it. The rest of May I will be rehearsing for the upcoming world tour and then the first stop of the tour is in South America. We are going to some places that we have never seen before so we are really looking forward to it.

Hola from South America!

We just arrived in Rio and it is so beautiful and the people are so nice.   We have loved visiting all of the different countries.  There have been so many fans everywhere we have been. Their love and support of music is incredible.  As you can see from the photo I posted this month, we even found time (and a place) for a game of wiffle ball.

Once we finish here it is back to the States for final rehearsals and tweaking of the new show on the new stage. I can’t wait for all of you to see it – it is massive.  We will also be doing promotion for our new CD. Mark your calendars June is going to be filled with lots of JB activities, most importantly the release of our album on June 16th as well as the start of our US leg of the World Tour officially kicks of June 20th in Dallas!

The creativity contest is in full swing and I’m so impressed with all of the new entries.  We have picked our first monthly winner - so if you haven’t already, be sure to get your entry in.  You can see all the entries and vote for your favorite on the contest page.  Be sure to keep checking back and voting for your favorite every month.  Each new entry I see inspires me even more.  You all should be very proud.

My Simple Win for this month – Traveling and seeing South America for the first time!

Talk to you soon

This month, I am writing to you having just returned from Europe. Just finished a quick trip to Madrid, Paris and London.

Next we are off to our final rehearsals for the North American leg of our world tour. We will be the second musical act to play the new Dallas Stadium when we launch on Saturday June 20th.  This summer we are pleased to have Honor Society and Jordin Sparks tour with us.  I want to say a special thank you to all of our team and crew who have been working non-stop to help bring this tour to life. It is truly going to be spectacular and I can't wait to share it with all of you.

We performed on the Today Show on the 19th the day before the tour launches. It was early but well worth it when I saw how many of you got up to join us!  Speaking of New York City - thanks to everyone who came out despite the weather for our GMA performance. We truly appreciate the dedication our fans show us each and every day.

The creativity contest continues this month, keep those entries coming. You guys make it so hard to pick a winner. Check out last months winner on the site.

I am going to be on dLife July 19th so mark your calendars.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on tour and hearing what you think about the new CD which was just released on Tuesday called Lines, Vines and Trying Times.

Hello from somewhere in the United States. I hope your summers are off to a great start! We’ve been very busy with the launch and promotion of our new CD "Lines, Vines and Trying Times", and of course the North American Leg of our world tour. It has been great seeing all of you in the different cities thus far.

In June, I had the honor of being part of the Children's Congress and testifying before a Senate committee on Capitol Hill about diabetes. It is important to let people know how vital it is to get funding for the research we need to find a cure for diabetes. It was also an honor to not only attend but speak on behalf of so many kids with diabetes.

My new TV commercial for Bayer's CONTOUR meter also launched in June. In it I talk about one of my Simple Wins, if you haven't seen it yet, you can check it out right here on the home page.

With it being summer, I hope that many of you are taking advantage of the diabetes camps that are available. Diabetes camps are a great thing and can be very helpful in teaching tips to properly manage your diabetes. Speaking of camp, we are going to be filming Camp Rock 2 in the upcoming months. It should be fun and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. Of course there will be some new surprises that I can't tell you about yet.

Congrats to last month’s winner of Bayer’s Express Your Simple Win contest.… I’m really inspired hearing about all of your Simple Wins. It is nice to see how so many people can be touched by so many different things…

On August 24th I had the honor of addressing the National Press Club in Washington, DC on behalf of Bayer. My goal was to once again increase diabetes awareness by speaking publicly about my experience, encourage education, and help raise funds for research and other programs for young people with diabetes. The more opportunities I have to talk and get the word out about diabetes, the more people will know about it, become invested in it and hopefully, we will come that much closer to a cure.

I was able to tell that audience about my desire to help others and how I had realized I’ve been given a platform to speak out to encourage and inspire those living with diabetes. Reaching out and sharing my story is one of the ways I can give back to others. My brothers and I also started the Change for the Children Foundation where we give to organizations that help children. Last year alone we raised over 1 million dollars for charities that are close to our hearts. These funds went to such organizations including pediatric diabetes research, education and treatment, as well as diabetes camps.

I have used Bayer’s CONTOUR meter this summer while on tour, other people like my parents and crew can carry the test strips to make sure I always have the tools to test regularly. On tour I have been able to create a support system around me; you will be amazed at how much it will help you manage your diabetes. Don’t be afraid to lean on those close to you to help you with those high and low days.

**Reminder Alert** The Express Your Simple Wins Creativity Contest is almost over, be sure to get your entries in before September 20th. Your video submissions can be a demonstration of song lyrics, photography, painting/drawing, acting or another form of creativity. In September I’ll get to select the grand prize winners from the monthly winners and personally meet them.

Hello from the set of Camp Rock 2-

This summer consisted of some memorable moments… Teen Choice Awards, performing on Good Morning America & The Today Show, Speaking in front of a Senate committee and the National Press Club, and traveling across North America on tour… to name a few!

We also had a softball team this summer as well called The Road Dogs. It was so much fun playing with our band.

Filming is going well; we should finish shooting at the end of the month. It is great to see everyone again and catch up on what they have been doing since we were last together.

My blog picture this month is from my birthday celebration. My family surprised me with a very special gift this year. I was given the piano that I wrote “A Little Bit Longer” on while filming the first Camp Rock Movie. The song will always have a special place in my heart and now to be gifted the piano – I was not expecting such a gift and was so thankful to my family.

I can’t believe all the outstanding entries that were turned in for the creativity contest. Well done everyone! It wouldn’t have been such a huge success without all your entries and votes in helping to pick each monthly winner. I can’t wait to work with Bayer to pick the winners! We’ll be announcing the grand prize winners very soon so stay tuned.

Hello Everyone,

October has been another busy month, my brothers and I just finished filming Camp Rock 2 and head back on the road this weekend to finish up our World Tour. We are going back to Latin and South America for a few dates and then it is off to Europe for the final leg of our World Tour.

Traveling to new places and meeting new people is one of my favorite parts of touring, but sometimes it can also make it more challenging for me to carefully monitor my blood glucose levels. I always make sure to have my CONTOUR® meter with me, and I take the time to check my glucose levels, no matter how busy I get - even when on stage sometimes.

Also, this month I’ll be announcing the winners of the Express Your Simple Win contest. I’m so impressed by all of the entries that were submitted. You all have so many diverse accomplishments to be proud of, and it made my job of selecting the winners nearly impossible. Congratulations to all of those who entered the contest and thank you for taking the time.

My Simple Win this month is taking care of myself and my health while having the time of my life on tour and filming a movie.

Hello from Europe!

My brothers and I are currently enjoying the great city of Antwerp in Belgium. This month's photo is from a shopping trip in Italy. We have been able to experience a lot of the cities that we are in this time and are having so much fun.

This month we had to do something we have never done before, postpone a show due to illness. Unfortunately, I was under the weather and wasn’t able to perform but am feeling much better. Thank you all very much for your well wishes. I am back in action and we have had a few shows since.

It is hard to believe it is November already. This year has flown by. It is important to remember this month is Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Just in time for Diabetes Awareness Month, Bayer announced the launch of the CONTOUR® USB meter, which is available online now. I just got mine and really like it. I love to get high tech gadgets when they come out and this one has really helped me to manage my diabetes. It has a USB port which plugs directly into a computer so you can upload your monitoring results and track patterns in your blood glucose levels. I think its technology will make monitoring and logging an easier process for me while I'm on tour and it will be a more simple way to share the information with my doctor.

Last month we chose the winners for the Express Your Simple Win Contest - As part of their prize, the winners were honored at the JDRF New York 37th Annual Promise Ball Gala on November 14th where their achievements were recognized by the diabetes community. I look forward to meeting them when we return from tour. And thank you again to everyone that entered the contest, choosing the winner was not an easy task.

My Simple Win: Touring the world, seeing the sights, learning new cultures and meeting all our great fans!

December has been a fun month. First I launched my solo project, Nick Jonas and The Administration and I am headed out on tour in January.

Next, I had the pleasure of meeting the grand prize winners from Bayer's Creativity Contest at Walt Disney World in Orlando. I got to hear about their lives and how they live with their diabetes. I also got to show them the new Bayer's CONTOUR® USB meter.

While in Orlando my brothers and I taped something for the Walt Disney World Christmas Parade, I hope you all tuned in to watch Christmas morning on ABC to see our surprise.

For all of us this month is usually full of plenty of parties and festivities, be sure to carefully choose what you eat and check your levels often, as we know with the right management, we can enjoy all the holidays just like everyone else.

From my family to your's, Happy Holidays and see you in 2010!

Happy New Year!

2010 has kicked off in an exciting way. Currently, I am on tour with my band The Administration. While I am enjoying every bit of this new journey, it was a bit strange the first couple nights to be onstage with a completely new band and without my two brothers. The Administration is made up of incredible musicians; they are also members of the New Power Generation, Prince's band, which speaks for itself. We have been playing some really great venues, for amazing crowds and I couldn't ask for more support from you. With that said, I am thrilled to let you know my CD will be dropping February 2nd! I hope you enjoy what I have created.

Many times I have talked about how important it is to have a great support team around you. My family has been so supportive since the day I was diagnosed. When my family can't be there, having others around who understand is so important. People who know and understand what you are going thru will help you manage your diabetes each and every day. For example when I started my adventure with the Administration, the transition was easier for me due to the fact that I still had many of my core team on the road with me. These are people who understand my highs and lows and how best to deal with them. Therefore, over the next few months, I thought I would introduce you to some of them and share their stories with you on how diabetes changed their daily routines.

Of course in the next few months Bayer and I will have some fun announcements to share as well so be sure to stay tuned.

Another busy month is coming to an end. This month I went back into production of JONAS, finished my first side project tour with Nick Jonas and the Administration and released my new album, "Who I Am".

Thank you to all for supporting my side project, your support put my album at #3 release week! I could have never accomplished that without the support of the fans, thank you so much. I had such a great time touring with The Administration and introducing the world to my new music. This is just the beginning of much more to come.

Production began this month on the 2nd season of JONAS. The writers have come up with some really good story lines for this season, should be a fun time shooting it all. In fact we have been shooting 5 days a week so it keeps me very busy. Personally can't wait for everyone to see it.

I hope that everyone is watching the Olympics. It is so inspiring to watch the various athletes and see how all their hard training and perseverance pays off.

My Simple Win this month: Using my new CONTOUR® USB meter during my hectic schedule. It makes it easy to keep track of all my levels by simply plugging it into my computer.

See you all soon!

It's officially Spring and you know what that means...baseball! I was invited to join the LA Dodgers Spring Training Camp at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ for a few days. What an amazing time, it was an experience I will never forget.

Production is continuing on JONAS, the show has truly evolved this second season. One major difference this season is that we shoot on location which has been a lot of fun. The second season of Living the Dream also started on the Disney Channel so be sure to check that out. It takes you along with us on our European leg of our World Tour.

This past month my friends at Bayer and I spent a day doing one of our video and photo shoots. We captured lots of great content and spent time together discussing the CONTOUR® USB meter and how it is helping me manage my diabetes. It was a pleasure to work again with Mary Ellen, John and PGATE, thanks for a great day!

My Simple Win this Month: Attending LA Dodgers training camp and not letting my diabetes slow me down.

Happy Easter and Passover.

I have had a busy month! Easter Sunday my brothers and I performed at Angel Stadium. April 16th was a Jonas Brothers takeover of Radio Disney, on the 17th I went and supported Joe and Demi at the premiere of Disney's OCEAN. Joe and Demi did a duet on the soundtrack called "Make a Wave".

On the 18th my family and I flew to NYC for the TJ Martell Foundation Family Day. My brothers and I along with our management were honored by the foundation. At the event we performed along with other artists Ana Maria, One Call, and Honor Society. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the cause. The TJ Martell Foundation is doing amazing things to help find the cure for Cancer and we were glad to be a part of it.

This whole month the production continues on JONAS. I can't wait for you guys to see the new season.

My Simple Win this month is monitoring my highs and lows so I feel good and can be where I need to be, when I need to be there.

May has been busy. We started month off by flying to Washington DC to attend the White House Correspondents dinner. Then we flew back to Los Angeles to shoot the final week of JONAS. We have officially wrapped production of the show and we can't wait for everyone to see the final product.

Did everyone see Kevin on Minute to Win It? Frankie and I had an awesome time in the audience. It was so nerve racking watching him though! I am so proud of my brother and the money he raised for our foundation, Change for the Children.

On May 16th, we performed for more than 200 guests at Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman's home for "Rock for Diabetes". It is a fundraiser for the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. This is the second year that we have done this and were honored to be part of it again. All the guests received one of my dog tags to show their continued support of Diabetes. If you don't have your dog tag yet be sure to get one at NicksSimpleWins.com.

Our tour dates were announced this month and to kick it off we performed on Good Morning America last Friday. I can't wait to see all of you again this summer.

My Simple Win this month - eating right and getting enough sleep so I stay healthy during all my travels.
